I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to acknow-

ledge the receipt of your letter 26153/13 of the 1st in-

stant enclosing a copy of a telegram from the Governor

of Hong Kong respecting the protection of the Chinese

section of the Canton-Kowloon Railway in the event of

hostilities between the northern troops and the Kwang-

tung rebels.

Sir E. Grey concurs in the desirability of the line

being protected provided the Military Authorities con-

sider the project feasible and the force at Hong Kong

sufficient for the purpose.

The Secretary of State would be glad of early in-

timation in the event of its being decided to take de-

finite action in the matter as he would desire to in-

struct His Majesty's Chargé d'Affaires at Peking to warn

The Under Secretary of State,
